Honestly, it’s an excuse. (Sam, Ruby)
Ruby ran her fingers through her thick hair, “I seriously don’t know.” She looked down, trying to hide the hurt and uncertainty in her face, “He won’t talk to me.” Swallowing hard she kept her eyes glued to her vessel’s sparkly pink toenails. She didn’t want to show Sam any weakness because she knew he’d find a way to exploit it. Sam was more under-handed than he liked to believe but Ruby knew it. When she finally looked back at his face she could tell how worn out he really way, “I mean it’s not like it matters or anything,” she said angrily, “it’s not like any of this fucking matters.”
Sam nodded, believing the other and looking towards the ceiling, trying to respect the attempt she was making to hide behind her own mask. The laugh that escaped him wasn’t bitter, but it wasn’t happy. Hollow, he looked to her, crossing his arms almost defensively. ”I remember, you talking about going to hell. How humans go down there, and they change,” He stated softly. ”I’ve seen it now. It breaks you, it turns you into something else, and…I know that’s what’s happened to me, I admit it. But I didn’t…break like others, and I’m not quite a demon, though I sometimes wonder how close I was to…” If they hadn’t pulled him out when they did? If he hadn’t been kept as a toy and not given the option?
“When you get back from hell everything’s different.” Ruby replied honestly, “You feel like a monster inside your own skin…or someone else’s if you wanna get technical. That’s how it was for me. I was disgusted with myself and what I’d become. I didn’t plan on ending up this way.” She laughed bitterly and bit her thumbnail, “When I was human I was a witch but you knew that. But I also had a family…I had a kid. Sometimes I wonder what she’d think of me now.” Ruby had never told anyone about her human life. She didn’t like to talk about it. “So what if you didn’t break? You did better than most. This limbo should make you grateful that you didn’t end up like me.”

Ruby shut the door and let Viper jump down from her shoulder. He scurried away, presumably to hunt some of the mice that frequented her building. She let herself look at Sam. He was still as hot as ever. Briefly she remembered touching his skin but shook it away before getting lost in the memory. Memories were such a human thing. She pulled a chair over and perched on it, “A question? Well fire away.”
It was almost a shame that the years of being a skinny stretched out thing had left him rather conscious of his appearance, and he still wore players, but it was Sam Winchester. Typically looks didn’t come across in his something to do, other than keeping his hair from being in his face. Watching her perch, and feeling something oddly familiar, only picturing two different women doing the same thing, he leaned against the counter as he spoke. ”Lucifer. Do you know if he’s really back or not?” He questioned, raising his eyebrows. ”I don’t want to deal with this again, but…I’d rather know the truth on the whole thing.” And knowing whether he was imagining it. All the same, he could hear the whispers of his own hallucination of the fallen angel.

Ruby smiled and licked her lips, “You’re all the offering I need but if you wanted to bring a can of tuna for Viper I’m sure he wouldn’t object.” She was trying to put him at ease. She was actually surprised he’d show up. Sam was so stubborn sometimes it almost hurt. Getting him to do something he didn’t want to do was like trying to lead a cow up the Spanish Steps. “Just call me Suicide Watch.” Ruby said, stepping aside, “Come in.”
“I don’t know what I’m offering, my soul isn’t worth anything anymore,” Sam replied with a shrug, looking at the kitten one more time, and sighed, walking in and letting his eyes wander over the room. Immediately, he found the exits he could get out through, calculating how fast he could get to them, and realizing, on some level, he might not even try, not at the moment. He didn’t feel the energy to bother. ”That might be a bit less popular to people than Ruby, Suicide,” He stated, rubbing his face with one hand, letting some more of the act drop, his tone tired. ”I actually came with a question that I wanted answered if you had it the answer, too.”

Sam had been about ready to turn around, when the door was opened. Closing his eyes for a moment, he let them open again to take the young woman in. The flat behind her was pretty clear on how often she was here, and his gaze stopped at the cat. ”Should I have brought an offering?” He questioned, no venom in his voice, but clearly caught between staying and leaving. This was a horrible idea, he kept telling himself, but he couldn’t help but feel cornered at this point. Letting a sigh escape, he kept himself together enough to glance up, but let it fall enough that he wasn’t quite the Sam she had known. ”Still willing to try to keep me alive and ticking before I take a gun to my own head?” He questioned, his hands in his pockets.
Ruby smiled and licked her lips, “You’re all the offering I need but if you wanted to bring a can of tuna for Viper I’m sure he wouldn’t object.” She was trying to put him at ease. Honestly, it’s an excuse. (Sam, Ruby)
This wasn’t actually what Sam wanted to do. Not really. Or he kept telling himself. There was still something there, and whenever he came across a demon in his reading, his mind wandered, and he hated himself for it. He’d been looking at far too many people, but he needed to keep his mind on this job and keeping his sanity, honestly. He’d started to talk about it to Jo more than he meant to, Ruby was the least of people he needed to talk to…
Ruby hadn’t been home long. The flat was pretty bare. Just a table, a couple chairs, and a big bed with rumpled sheets. The kitchen didn’t get any use since she didn’t eat and her duffle bag was still packed up in the corner. So far she’d yet to figure out what was going on.
Talking to Sam didn’t really get her anywhere; except hot and bothered. She kept tabs on him, sneaking around like a total creeper wherever he went and hiding in the shadows. Ruby cast off her leather jacket, tossing it on the bed, and walked into the bathroom. She observed her vessel carefully. She was a pretty girl but still Sam didn’t like her. Okay so they had a history but whatever. Guys were guys.
Viper, the stray kitten, wandered in and pressed against her legs with a mew. Ruby didn’t want to admit it but she liked having Viper around. It was nice to have something that didn’t think you were a total bitch. A knock at the door made look up. She picked up Viper and sat him on her shoulder, the little kitten’s claws latched onto the fabric of her shirt so he could stay on.
“Wonder who that could be?” Ruby said with a smile when in truth she knew exactly who it was.
